Political Engagement

MY POLITICAL COMMUNITIES

My areas of study intersect with my values and pull me into political communities to engage with the issues I find important. Part of my development as a lifelong learner involves engagement with different communities and figuring out how both my education and I fit into different movements.

BERNIE RALLY

As the 2020 campaign season rolled out, I was excited to participate in my first presidential election! As an LSJ student, it was my chance to see the process firsthand and really feel civic engagement beyond voting in local elections. I went to the Bernie rally in Tacoma with friends and felt the energy of so many Washingtonians eager for change. We cheered at calls for reproductive freedom, a higher minimum wage, and endless ideas for challenging systems of oppression. There was so much hope and the feeling of community, where we all came together around a candidate who expressed our desire for policy rooted in compassion and equality.

COMMON POWER

I worked with Common Power from Spring til Autumn of 2020: the peak of election season. I was spending hours each week with my teams, organizing and executing our civic education projects and GOTV efforts. It was such an energizing communal experience as we gathered to discuss what was happening across the country and how our efforts were making a difference. Common Power gave me so many experiences like leading an educational program, writing state research reports, organizing volunteers, phone banking and emailing for advocacy, and communicating through social media. It felt so nice to be involved in something important and use my productivity for the benefit of a greater organization.
