A Patchwork Story

   Law, Societies & Justice

I love my major. The LSJ community has helped shape me into a lifelong learner. It has engaged me in an interdisciplinary education with history, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, political science, international studies, and law. I wanted to highlight some of my favorite moments and experiences in LSJ, as it has been the most important experience to me in college.

LSJ 321: Human Rights Law in Culture and Practice

LSJ 321 MEMO

This memo was the first essay I wrote for an LSJ class, and it was so fun to think about and write. As the quarter went on, I felt more and more like this class was a sign that LSJ is the path for me. While the idea of medicine was enticing, I’ve always had that bit of doubt, like something wasn’t right. This class, though, made me excited to learn, curious, engaged, and ready to dive into the world of LSJ. It’s not just law or human rights, but philosophy, history, and a place to discuss with my classmates.

LSJ 200 MIDTERM

This class was so interesting and got me even more excited about LSJ. Every quiz section was so engaging and I found myself looking forward to hearing what my classmates had to say about the readings. My first exam, I got a 4.0 and was so proud of myself! But it also made me nervous, because I felt like I didn’t know what I did right or how to do it again. These nerves got the best of me and, combined with an awkward prompt on the next exam, I didn’t do as well. It was a bummer to feel like I started off strong and couldn’t keep up with the results. I studied even more for the second exam than the first one! But it’s okay if I don’t always get a perfect score, and it’s not always going to be within my control.

LSJ APPLICATION

In Winter 2020, I finally applied to the LSJ major! Having taken the minimum course requirements and eager to be part of the community I had so quickly fallen in love with, I couldn’t wait to apply. The day I was supposed to hear back, I was drowning in nerves and anticipation. I can’t even guess how many times I checked my email, even though I knew I probably wouldn’t get a response til 5pm. I had to run to the store for some ginger ale to soothe my stomach! Thankfully, all turned out well and I am an LSJ major!
